How a quiet birthday became the biggest one yet
How many times have you ordered off Amazon and just clicked “order”? Tens? Hundreds? I miss that simplicity. Timing Amazon packages while on the road can be confusing. But it’s all small stuff really.
This past week was birthday week for my partner and myself. Besides the Amazon chaos - something we’ve gotten good at juggling - it was a low-key affair. Pools, dinner, drinks, and time spent doing what we want when we want to. Dinner especially was noteworthy - going back to a really good place, getting my favorite dish, a drink that hits just right. How could you ask for a better time, really.
Embracing the nomad life does mean birthdays look different on the road, but I think they’ve only gotten better, really. No more schedules to worry about, no more major coordination efforts with a lot of people, just me doing exactly what I want - having the freedom to choose everything we do that day without consideration of anyone else’s schedule or commitments.
It’s refreshing - being beholden to no one. Setting your own schedule, expectations, and flow. Life moves at my pace and speeds and slows as I want it to.
This birthday really makes me feel more like an adult than ever before. Making major life choices that will have an impact on the entirety of my life, not just a small piece of it. Choosing to stay a nomad, working through career pivots and advancements, discussing settling down and what would have to happen to make it any kind of attractive option. Looking at the future, seeing all the potentials, and choosing what fits me and my life best right now - it’s heady and exciting and makes me antsy for what’s next.
Looking at what birthdays used to be and seeing what they’ve grown into, I see that a lot of the change is due to my partner. Without him I wouldn’t be where I am. A push in this direction, unlocking a door here, the encouragement to step through and take it - I’ve grown into something I thoroughly love being.
